how will a 360 engine swap effect my performance?

how will a 360 engine swap effect my performance?

I am planning a 360 swap into my jeep. I just added 33s and am thinking that I should re gear the jeep. I am wondering if the 360 will add enough power over the old tired 258 to turn those tires? I am currently running 3.54s but was thinking of upgrading to a lower ratio. I cant afford to do both the gear swap and the engine swap at the same time, as I am a college student on a limited budget, so will the 360 help my to high gear problem. I am sure eventually I will upgrade my gears, but cant do both now and a V8 seems to be more appeling to me at the time. Will the 360 get me by, will it help with my low gearing prob? I have a T18 so I can use the granny which spinns the tires fine.

WHat do you think

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Your jeep will drive fine but it all depends on what you expect from your jeep. Do the re-gear when funds allow and you will be used to the 360 by then and know how low you want to go.

Sounds good to me. Thats what I was thinking.

Does anyone know what the lowest ratio that was avilable for the dana 30 and amc20 stock. I was thinking I might be able to find a used set of gears? Probably not, but might be an option if they ever came around 4.10 or slightly higher or lower. Just a thought.

thanks for the reply.

According to www.drivetraindirect.com....you can get down to 4.88s for both the AMC 20 and the D30....but I'd be wary....especially if you're syill using 2 piece shafts in the AMC 20.

Yeah...but did any applications come stock with these low gears. Has any one had any luck with swapped in used gears? Where is a good source of these used gears?

thanks

Without overdrive, I think you'll be happy with 3.54's with the 360 and 33's. I had that for a while (with an auto) an it was fine for the street. Due to the high first gear of the auto, I went to 4.10's and now at 70 the engine screams at 3000 rpm.
