optima battery winch connection

Heard a rumor that you cannot hook up wich leads to the side terminal posts on an Optima. Will that destroy the battery?? Regular SLI is connected to the regular terminals.

Re: optima battery winch connection

I heard this too the other day on the trail. The problem is the side posts offer to much resistance. I'm not sure if this is bad for the battery, or the winch. But I wouldn't want to take my chances. Hook your winch up to the top posts, and your starter to the side posts.

Re: optima battery winch connection

the side posts are connected to the main with pretty thin strips, so the constant load of a winch would burn them, that's what i've heard. i'm ordering a winch today, so i had the same question, as i don't want to fry my week-old Optima. i will have to rewire it and use side posts just for ignition and top posts for direct winch and CB connections.

Re: optima battery winch connection

sounds like a large load of crap to me.. the side posts are electrically EXACTLY the same as the top.. look at the cross sectrion of an optima.. they are connected with a huge lead plate. I've been running my winch off of the side posts of my optima for 7 years.

Re: optima battery winch connection

The yellow top in my Jeep was wired with the winch to the side posts and the normal engine cables to the top posts for years. No problem ever. A while back I read about this issue on the Optima site. When I re-wired the Jeep for TBI recently, I switched the cables around - just one less thing to worry about.

I agree with elusive, it doesn't sound right.

Re: optima battery winch connection

I too have rewired my winch to the top posts of my optima’s and the rest of the loads to the side posts. The optima sight says that this is the acceptable way to wire a huge load like a winch.
I agree with elusive that it probably doesn’t matter to most. It really depends on the load placed on the side terminals. The optima site doesn't say what the max load rating is for the side post.
I would guess that a starter with lights and other accessories is also a huge load. My winch supposedly draws 250amps, anyone know what a starter on a V8 draws?

Re: optima battery winch connection

Well, I have seen with my own eyes the side terminals melt right out of an Optima when hooked to a winch....

After digging through Optima's website, here is what they say.

Re: optima battery winch connection

i stand corrected.. i guess my xd9500i isnt a "high amperage device" since i have run it for a good 10 min solid with my 200+ amp alternator kicking....
I dont know.. i've seen optimas apart and I've seen the plates connecting the side posts to the top terminals.... i really dont see the difference...
