Cap & Rotor Upgrade For 4.0 Liter Guys

You know, I don't know why I didn't look at that picture of Dorfs sooner...

Here is your upgrade for the 4.0 Liter...

That's the distributor cap adaptor, distributor cap, and rotor used on the E.E.C. distributors from Ford

Try an '89 Ford Truck With 300 CID I-6 WITH E.E.C. for the Cap Adaptor & Cap,
Try an '89 Ford Truck With 302 CID V-8 WITH E.E.C. for the Rotor.

Hats off to Dorfs for posting the picture!

What would the advantages be for doing this upgrade?

TR, thats still the wrong cap adapter acording to the parts guy. Acording to STANDARD the cap adapter is the same from 79-94 (Wells P/N F-960?)for the 300 I6. So the search is still on for the correct cap adapter. And I thought it was finnaly laid to rest. The quest continues.

What I don't understand is... why don't these engines come with larger caps from the factory? I guess any cap-size-related problems were eliminated when they went to distributorless ignition (was that 2000?)

Andytron your parts guy doesn't know what he's talking about. As you noted his book says the cap adapter is the same from '79-94. That is correct. Notice that TR said '89. Last time I checked '89 fit within '79-94. If anybody knows it's TR. You should believe him before your parts guy.

Snowtow, I looked at the part in person that the book called for 'tween 79-94. It won't fit. It's differant than the one for the TR upgrade on the 258 which is what the 79-94 adapter fits. The one I was shown at two places was differant than the one in the above photo. Does this make more sense? I do realise that TR knows what he's talking about. But,I believe he said try an 89 not an 89 is the correct part.

Re: Cap & Rotor Upgrade For 4.0 Liter Guys

There are two types of cap adapters in that range of years. One has clips that hold it to the distributor and one screws in. The one for the 4.2 is the clip type and the one for the 4.0 is the screw type. If you look for the exact one TR mentioned it will work. It has to be from an EEC IV engine which basically is the engine control system.

SnowTow hit the head on the nail (or is that the other way around?)

'WITH E.E.C.' wasn't put in there because my keyboard malfunctioned...

Without E.E.C. gets you the cap adaptor, cap and rotor for the 'old style' Motorcraft distributor with vacuum advance.

WITH E.E.C. gets you the cap adaptor, cap and rotor for the 'New Style' distributor WITHOUT VACUUM ADVANCE

The E.E.C. ignition cap adaptor and cap is even larger diameter than the DuraSpark ignition cap (Tribute to the E-core coil I assume).

YOU WILL have to beat the average parts counter guy in the head with a claw hammer to get your point across....

Re: Cap & Rotor Upgrade For 4.0 Liter Guys

I have been trying TR. They refuse to believe that there is more than one cap adapter in that year range. Which is a PITA as I have never had a problem with this parts place before. I will try again though. I'll head back over to my local NAPA in a few minutes. Snowtow, the one I looked at did have screws but was incorrect.
