CJ Fuel Pump - is it also a check vavle?

My 83 258 seems like it takes way too long to start up when cold. It appears to be waiting on fuel to get to the carb. My old CJ with AMC V8 only required a couple pumps of the pedal, turn the key and it was running immediately.

I'm thinking the fuel pump may be letting the fuel run back down the lines toward the fuel tank..

Anybody have experience with this?

Even if there were a problem with the pump, there is plenty of fuel in the float bowl to start the engine. After the Jeep has set for several hours (overnight is better), remove the air cleaner and open the choke then work the butterflies. You should see a spray from the accelerator pump. If you do, there's gas enough in the bowl to start and run. Start looking for other problems. If you don't, you probably have a pinhole in the power valve diaphragm.

You may be flooding it with the "couple pumps of the pedal". I never needed to pump the pedal except sometimes in very cold weather.

I've replaced so many parts that my old Jeep has become my new Jeep.
