Manual Steering Box Rebuild?

How hard is it to rebuild a manual steering box on a CJ. I have about 1" or play from the right to the left and it kinda gets a bit hairy. So I cant't decide whether or not to rebuild (which I will do if it isnt hard) or just buy something new. Let me know some opinions.

Re: Manual Steering Box Rebuild?

I had my steering gear rebuilt by RedHead Steering Gear in Ballard Washington. Perhaps they would be willing to discuss the matter with you via telephone.

RedHead is sorta local to me.

Re: Manual Steering Box Rebuild?

Steering gears are pretty simple devices. Anyone who knows a box end from an open end should be able to do it easily. Parts availability could be a problem, though.

If you have an inch of play at the end of the pitman arm, something is probably worn pretty badly. On the other hand the problem could be that one of the adjustments has loosened, and all you need to do is adjust the box. DON'T try to do that on the Jeep though. Follow the proper procedure from a repair manual.

I might have been born at night, but it wasn't LAST night.
