Trac Lock differential gear oil?

I am in the proscess of changinf the fluids in my 79 CJ5, looks like the past owner hadn't in a while. I was reading my repair manual and it said that the trac lock takes a special kind of lubricant and that I should NOT use ordinary gear oil. What is this special lubricant and do I need to go to the dealer to get it?

let me know
thanks
tony

Re: Trac Lock differential gear oil?

You'll need a special limited slip additive (also called friction modifier).

See what others think about gear oil choices with a LS. I've seen GL-5 make Corvettes with posi clunk and rattle. GL-3 or the actual GM brand stuff fixed it.

Re: Trac Lock differential gear oil?

dealer? ye shall be damned!
your local pepboys/autozone/checker/napa/walmart......

but not at mcdonalds or circle K

i get whatever brand has a cool looking bottle and shove in the rear diff with the trac lok. works great for thousands of miles and i would assume it is the stock trac lok with 147,000 miles.

Re: Trac Lock differential gear oil?

Yep, you can get it almost anywhere (even the local hardware store carries it), and it costs about $6 a tube/bottle.

Re: Trac Lock differential gear oil?

Is it an additive or different fluid? If its an adative is their anything special for a trac lock or do I just use what it says on the back of the bottle?

Re: Trac Lock differential gear oil?

It's just an additive. It comes in a 4,6, or 8 oz tube or bottle. Just add it to the gear oil when you refill the diff. Don't forget to turn some figure-8's afterwards so it gets distributed throughout the clutch packs.
