should i get a CB with a built-in speaker, like this Cobra
or this Uniden

or get one with external speaker?

BTW, which one of the above, Cobra or Uniden, you would prefer?

Re: CB

I'm sure they will both serve your purposes. The Cobra seems to be a household name moreso than the Uniden, with more history behind the brand.

As for the internal or external speaker, it doesn't really matter - if it has an internal speaker there is still a jack on the back to plug in an external speaker. That's what I've got for the Cobra in the CJ, since I can't hear the internal speaker on the highway. I put a suction-cup mounted external speaker right there on the dash.

Re: CB

They both "should" have a jack on the back to plug in a ext. speaker, At least most do. It depends on where you mount the unit at, I guess. If you put it on your rollcage above you noggin, its close to your ears and can be heard well, thats where I put mine, easy to get to, but not where I'm gonna be bumping my knees on it and stuff. A guy I work with used to own a CB shop, and I while talking about radios the other day, he said that "Realistic" brand radios, (radio shack carries them) have about the strongest recieve ability (power?) of the brands he seen. I don't know how much truth there is in that, but he knows his sh!t. (All CB's are Fcc limited to 4watts of transmit power, he was talking recieving ability)

Anyway, both of those radios are good, I used to have a little Uniden, I really liked it. Guess I would decide by price difference.

BTW, where did you see those CB's at?

Cobra is now made by Maxon or Kraco. I don't recall which. Uniden is still made by Uniden. Uniden is better in my eyes.

Might also look into the Texas Ranger line of CB's. Great stuff although the company that makes them (RCI) is known more for their Amateur/HAM products. (http://www.rangerusa.com)

Re: CB

the UNiden is a MUCH higher quality unit, Cobra was made by Uniden years ago when they got teh good reputation, now they are cheapies, just like radio shack, maxon and teh other cheapones.

it doesnt really matter though for trail communications, the ant is the single most important item for performace much mpore so thatn the radio it self.

speaker config depends on where your mounting, and if you want to hear it on teh highway with the doors off.

Old computer speakers make good external speakers, usually much better sound quality than the built in spoeakers, and the ones ive had had the correct 1/8 phono jack.
