need help with snap ring after hub replacement!

I went to replace the rotors on my 78 CJ, so i thought i would buy rotors w/ new hubs on them and just replace everything while i was at it. I installed the races on the new hub and put everything back the way i took it off. The last piece that needs to go before you put the locking mechanism of the hub on is a snap ring on the axle shaft. But i cant get in on. I cant seem to get the axle shaft to pull out another 1/8" to get the snap ring on. Is there a trick or something that i am not doing?

Also how much torgue should i put on the two big lock nuts? I am sure its not much, but i dont want to warp a bearing or something.- Thanks- Tim

You can pry out on the back of the axle U-Joint to move the axle out and to get the snap-ring on. I don't know what the specification is for the "Big Nuts" but I usually spin the hub as I tighten the inner nut until I feel a drag on the bearings, the outer nut is a jamb/lock nut.

Not sure if I am remembering correctly, but isn't there a threaded hole in the axle end? Thread a long bolt into it and pull.

I've replaced so many parts that my old Jeep has become my new Jeep.

You can put a screw driver in the u-joint and try and push it out.

Tim, just hand tighten the inner nut as you spin the hub/rotor so the bearing will seat, then back it off 1/8-1/4 of a turn. Torque the outer nut to 50 ft/lbs and bend the lock washer over.

You'll know immediately if you got the torque correct. If you didn't it'll burn up in about 50 miles.

The end of the axle shaft does have a threaded portion on it, just thread a bolt in there and yank on it with one hand and put the snap ring in place with the other.

The 'bolt' that will go in the end of the axle shaft is a 7/16" fine thread (it was on my '83)...you might not have one layin' around, so run to your local hardware store and pick one up before tearing into it

Re: need help with snap ring after hub replacement

I believe the spec on CJ wheel bearing nuts is 50lbs (while spinning hub) then back off 1/6th of a turn
