backspace and rim width?

Can someone tell me the backspacing and rim width on my 78 CJ7 Golden Eagle Stock rims? Since it is the narrow trac I am considering rims with less backspacing to widen the stance. But I need a starting point.
Thanks

Re: backspace and rim width?

If you look on the inside of the wheel, you should see the size stamped. It probably won't give you the backspacing but it will tell you something like 15x8 or 15x7. As for the backspacing, just remove the tire/wheel and lay it on its side and use a ruler or tape measure to check the backspacing. You might want to hold a level up against your ruler to make sure you're perfectly straight up and down.

They should be 15x8 with 3-3/4" backspacing. I don't think there are any with less backspacing though, I could be wrong.

Will,
Love your Eagle!! My original graphics are getting tired. The previous owner had a carb fire. Thanks for the info. Also, in case you ever need Golden Eagle graphics. austinjeeps.com has them.

Re: backspace and rim width?

I had the same problem. The back spacing on my stock 15X8 rims was about 4". With narrow track axles, my 33X12.5s were rubbing the wheel wells and frame. Additionally, the rear axle is narrower than the front. I ordered custom 3" backspaced steel wheels from Rocky Road Outfitters (www.Rocky-Road.com) for about $50 (unpainted). They eliminated all rubbing, and now extend the same width as the front wheels. US Wheel is the manufacturer, and I believe Summit Racing can special order from US Wheel as well.

Re: backspace and rim width?

For about $50 each, you can get some wheel spacers as another option.

Re: backspace and rim width?

Most wheel spacers are not suitable for offroad use. The ones that are run over $100 a pair and are at least 2" wide. If your looking to keep your stock wheels there are companies that will cut and re-weld your existing wheels.

Re: backspace and rim width?

Would 1" or 1.25" bolt on spacers be that bad if I'm not doing "serious" wheeling?
