Re: best D44 for rear of 87YJ?

I bought a junk 87 Grand Wagoneer. I thought it had a Dana 44 rear but after removal and rebuilding time came it was an AMC model 20. The front was a Dana 44. The front after a bunch of repairs bolted right into my 93 YJ. The rear is taking some work. ie moving spring perches, shock mounts and it had a bad seal on the outer wheel bearing which spoiled the brakes big time. I am installing the rear today. I believe some of the 87 and earlier Grand Wagoneers had a rear Dana 44. I have a 89 Grand Wagoneer for sale but I am not sure what that has in the rear. I can check if you think you can find a junk where you are.

Re: best D44 for rear of 87YJ?

thanks for the info.
i see this add in phx rag:
SCOUT parts Dana 44 front & rear axles, discs front, drum rear, $995/pr. Auto trans w/Dana 20 transfer case, pwr steering pump. (602)694-6565

maybe a scout donor will work? is $450 ea a little high?
guess i am looking for the same length axle as my 35 and one that will match up close as possible, drum brakes, etc. i plan on moving the spring perches to get rid of my 12* shims. still will keep the SUA configuration.

Re: best D44 for rear of 87YJ?

I paid slightly less than that. I bought the whole Wagoneer for $25 and then another $25 to get it ramp trucked to my house. My buddy gave me $25 for the carb and electronic ignition for his 83 CJ with a 360. I used the power steering pump, front and rear axles so far. We decided to pull the motor, trans and t/c and save it.

Re: best D44 for rear of 87YJ?

yep- you did alright on that deal

guess i just answered my own question:

The XJ and MJ are/were available with a Dana 44 with the heavy duty towing option or metric ton option. I'm not sure if the XJ always came with a Dana 44 when the towing option was ordered. The axles will interchange between the models and use a 5 on 4.5" wheel bolt pattern. This axle could also be a good low buck swap for a Wrangler YJ, but the sping perches would need to be moved. The shafts are one piece and 30 spline.

That's too much. I paid $400 for the pair, bought brand new brakes (calipers, pads, rotors, drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, hardware kit) for just under $300. That save you almost $300 - the price of either a locker or a set of gears.

I'm boycotting sigs. If ya wanna see what I have, check my profile.

no to sound like a 60 60 60 guy, but for about $300 you could get a narrow 14 bolt with 4.56 gears and it would darn near bolt right in..

84 CJ7, 258, HEI, M/C 2100 carb, 5 inch lift, RS9000's, 33x12.5 BFG M/T's, 4.56's and Detroit softlocker, full cage & belts, Xenon flares, Dana 44 rear, GM dual diaphragm brake booster

Re: best D44 for rear of 87YJ?

this looks like WAY too much

$700 or $600 & your stock 3.55 geared axle
Well I am going to de mod the XJ some to sell it faster & cheap. I
have my D44 with a brand new lockright (less than 1000 miles) on it.
The price is $600+your stock 3.55 geared axle or $700 with out your
axle

i do have the 3.55 35 but $600 too much.

Re: best D44 for rear of 87YJ?

the best fitting dana 44 rear is one out of a XJ, same width and same bolt pattern, just need to re-do spring pearches and mounts........BUT good luck finding one and they do cost more than wagoneer or scouts 44's

ya, a 14-bolt is very similiar to a 44 , i hear some folks are running them little 60 rears these days
