GL-3 OR GL-5

Guys:
I've heard that GL-5 will screw up your AX-5 or AX-15 transmissions, and that you need to put GL-3 in instead. Is this BS? Why would it make a difference? Would a synthetic GL-5 be ok?
Thanks ahead of time for your replies.

Re: GL-3 OR GL-5

I've asked this question before myself, and I get about 50% saying that GL-5 is bad, and the other 50% saying it works great. The concern is that a certain additive in the GL-5 oil will damage the brass syncronizer rings. My "official" Chilton's manual, as well as other manual transmission books I've seen, all suggest GL-5 for the AX-15. You could play it safe and just get Redline MTF GL-3. This particular oil has been suggested to me several times before.

I put Mobil synthetic in my AX 5 and after about two years it was full brass particles. It actually looked kinda perddy. There wasn't much left of the synchros at that point.

Re: GL-3 OR GL-5

My 1995 FSM for the XJ and YJ says to use 75W90 or 80W90 (I forget which) GL-5. I do remember hearing something about one year of the AX-15 requireing special lube. Do a search. It was covered a while back.
