YJ 350 TBI Swap - Gauges?

Hoping someone has some experience with this: Just wired up a Chevy TBI 350 into a friends' '90 YJ. Everything runs fine, no problem. The Jeep has the factory gauges. Will the YJ gauges work with the Chevy oil pressure and coolant temp sensors? I have the wires picked out to match up, but I don't want to smoke his gauges, so I haven't hooked them up! If they will work, that's great, if not, I'll tell him to get some aftermarket mechanical gauges. Or, maybe pull the sensors from the original 4.2 engine. Thanks in advance.

They should work.
In any case they wont smoke the gauges, they just may not read accurately. My gauges worked fairly well with the 5.0 sending units when I swapped it in. I still opted for aftermarket gauges as soon as I could find the time to do it. I just installed the aftermarkets into the YJ dash where the stock gauges were housed.

H8's right, they should work. mine work great, but my temp gauge is off about 20 degrees high (thinks it's 210 when its only 190) otherwise the oil press and volt meter and everything works right. (I just modified the original wires to fit the gm connectors to so I didn't have to mess with the connections at the dash.

I was just wondering how long it took you to do the 350 swap. I'm gonna be putting in a 318 from a '94 Grand Cherokee and was hoping to get some pointers. I have the 2.5L 4 cylinder right now.

I'm doing a 350 TBI swap in my YJ this spring.

Did you guys have to do anything with the tach?

Thanks

Re: YJ 350 TBI Swap - Gauges?

Charly,
I went with an aftermarket tach, installed in the stock location. I used a trigger wire off of the ignition to the aftermarket tach, and it worked perfectly.
I originaly tried to use the stock tach, and bought the MSD, tachometer adapter kit. I just kept blowing fuses. The MSD tech hotline, was at a loss also.
The aftermarket tach, is better lit, and easier to read at a glance, and is more accurate, so it was worth the extra money.

Re: YJ 350 TBI Swap - Gauges?

Thanks for the input Jeff and bald one. They read about like you mentioned, bald one.

As far as the swap, I didn't do the mechanical swap on this one, only the wiring. Another friend did the engine swap - he does this stuff for a living. I had done other TBI swaps, but into older Chevys, not Jeeps. He used an aftermarket motor mount kit and center dump, block hugger headers to make ehaust routing easier. Also a new radiator with the connections located correct for the small block. This Jeep had already had a T18, Dana 300, 44 front and 60 rear swapped in before, so the T18 had to be adapted to the small block. He used a steel bellhousing and hydraulic clutch. He's also building a 60 front for it now since the 44 didn't stand up to even the old 4.2 engine, and that was with all Moser shafts.
