360 in a CJ5?

I have an old cherokee lying around with a freshly rebuilt 360 in it. I have not registered it in the last 6 years so I figure I cant sell it for crap, what can I do.

What about the CJ?? What would be involved in swaping it into the CJ? I have a T18 tranny, dana 30 and model 20?

I have never done a engine swap, can I handle this? Will the 360 bolt up to the t 18, do I need any adapters or new bell housing?

Will the axles hold up, I run 33s, future includes a lock right in the front, I have the stock trac-lock in the rear.

what do you think?

thanks
tony

Re: 360 in a CJ5?

if the cheerokee is a standard than the swap is easy you will have all the parts you need if the cheerokee is an auto than you will need to get a 360 specific flywheel all the amc v8 engines were balanced differently so it has to be specific for a 360 4wdhardware has them though they are a bit pricey new but the cj5 is a perfect candidate for the 360 i had one once with a 401 and boy was it fun use the bellhousing that you have with the t18 and you will be fine though if you have the model 20 rear diff you might wanna think about getting one piece axles the 360 makes gobs of torque enuf to tist the splines of a factory model 20

Re: 360 in a CJ5?

How much aprox. will the flywheel cost me?

Is the T-18 pleanty strong enough? ( If I am going to scatter the tranny if I dump the clutch then I dont want o do it?)

Also should I just replace the axles with one pieces now, or do you think the stock axles might be alright?, and I should just keep them untill they break?

Re: 360 in a CJ5?

the t18 is plenty strong enuf they used it in 3/4 ton jeep trucks with no problems now for the rear i would replace the axles as soon as you get enuf cash they can leave you very stranded if they break the flywheel is a couple hundred beans new but usually around 100 to 150 used if ya find a used one just take it to a machine shop to have the clutch surface turned it really sucks to have to do that once it is together but all in all it is a very straight forward swap pull the six out an put the eight in also make sure the radiator in the cj is good if ya can swing it get a 3core thats what my current cj5 has in it from the factory with a 304 v8

The flywheel is around $250 new from 4wd Hardware. The t-18 is plenty strong enough.Worry about your axles giving out long before the tranny. If you don't dump the clutch the axles may hold for a while. It all depends on how hard you wheel it.

Re: 360 in a CJ5?

Do you mean the whole axles or just the axle shafts.
thanks very much.

Re: 360 in a CJ5?

t18's plenty strong. definitely scrap the stock axle shafts. hhmm, you have a whole waggie, and depending on local machine shop prices, you could probably get its axles narrowed to fit your cj for not much more than a 1pc axle kit. food for thought.

if it aint broke, the pedal is on the right

Re: 360 in a CJ5?

I hava 1980 cherokee with the 360 and an automatic tranny. I think it has a dana 44 in the front and a model 20 heavy duty in the rear. Would these be decent canidates for the axles swap? Is it worth swaping a model 20 for a model 20 HD, whats is the difference between the two? Would I have to djust anything else(spring perches, steering...)??? I am only running 33's, is it worth the trouble of swaping the axles or should I just get 1 piece axle shafts????

Re: 360 in a CJ5?

if its a narrow track cherokee its a good rear axle donor.

if its a wide track cherokee, then its really too wide for most folks.

the hd20 rears have thicker tubes, and one pc axles from the factory, plus they have that neat 6 lug pattern that matches the good front dana 44s.

My 77 CJ5 is getting a 76 wag front axle, and a 81 wag rear axle.
