I want to put a v8 into my 83 cj7. am i going to be able to pass smog in ca? From what i understand, as long as the engine i put in is newer than my jeep, and i use all the smog S#$t from that engine, i should be fine. is this right?

That my understanding. I live in CA and just swapped in an 82 wagoneer 360 into my 82 CJ. I kept all the smog stuff on it and after I get all the bugs worked out I plan to smog it. If you find out something different let me know.

I'm not sure, but I seem to remember a post that said for CA in addition to having to be the same year or later, the engine had to have been offered as OEM for that model. I also seem to remember that he said you might be able to get a waiver if you did it before the fact.

Maybe the guy is still around and can relate his experiences to you. Maybe I'm just dead wrong.

I've replaced so many parts that my old Jeep has become my new Jeep.

I've read a few magazine articles where they've swapped in a SB Chevy in CA and they were not a factory option.

Re: CA SMOG? V8 INTO 83CJ

In CA you have to follow very strict rules regarding engine swaps. You will want to get the list or rules from the Bureau of Automotive Repair BEFORE you start your swap. Study the rules, and perform your swap accordingly so you can get past the smog referee the first time. Many people don't then hit the referee and fail for lots of little reasons. No check engine light, no charcoal canister, and the like are probably some of the top reasons for failing. Those people then complain that the process is "too complicated". It is something of a PITA, but if you know the rules ahead of time it is much easier to win the game.

Utah is right. You have to have ALL of the original emissions equipment from the host car and it has to be a newer year model. They do SBC all the time without any problems. Just make sure you have it all. The best way is to get a doner car and keep at your house until you are done and have it bought off by DMV.
