There are a few ways to do it. If you post your e-mail address, do it like this:
and just let people know to remove the nospam. portion of the address.
You can also use "public" and "private" e-mail addresses. If I know I'm putting my e-mail address down for some sort of subscription, I use my public address which is from HotMail.
Spammers get your addresses from a bunch of methods.
1.) You sign up for something. This is called "opt-in".
2.) You sign up for something and the company sells your name. This is called "opt-out".
3.) Trolling. This is when spammers use a special filter to poll public forums, like this one, for combinations of characters that resemble an e-mail address, such as [email protected]
. Another form of "opt-out" mail.
When you get spam, DO NOT REQUEST THAT YOUR NAME BE TAKEN OFF THE LIST! A company may have many lists. You ask to be removed from list A, they say OK and add you to list B.
As far as spam filters go, it's pretty simple. Set the filter up so that when it encounters spam it moves it directly to your trash folder without prompting you. Out of sight, out of mind. I have never seen an e-mail program that doesn't allow you an "exclude" list. If you find that your filter is moving your daily joke to the trash, simply add it to the exclude list.
Do a Google search for spam, and you will find many resources to combat it. Unfortunatly, it cannot be completly avoided.
