Tranny noise..HELP!!!

Ok, i got a 89' wrangler, and i don't know what kind of tranny i have in it. Is it the AX-15. or the light duty one that Jeep made. the thing is that my tranny is making god awful noises. i start my jeep up with the cluch in, let out the clutch and there is a whining noise, as i shift through the gears the noise excalates and then starts over at the begining of each gear, if i have 3 or more poeple in, then 5th gear is really noisy....any help would be great.

89' jeep wrangler yj, saraha, 4" skyjacker, HEI conversion.

You have checked the oil level, right?

I've replaced so many parts that my old Jeep has become my new Jeep.

Take out the back seat, never use 5th(like me), and turn up the radio...this works fine for my AX15 that I paid $400 for at a junkyard 3 years ago, and it's still going strong!

Re: Tranny noise..HELP!!!

I have the same thing going on in my 89 YJ. The damage in mine was caused by low transmission fluid. but, I asked the same question as you, while trying to identify my transmission.

The story goes, jeep switched to the Ax-15 mid year, I've heard that YJs made after 03/89 have the ax-15. early YJs have a Peugeot.

regardless, it is super easy to identify the Peugeot trans. I've copied the post that helped me identify my AX-15.

crawl under your jeep and look at the transmission , if there is a split down the center like its made of 2 pieces its the Peugeot, if its one piece its the AX-15, and by split I mean a line running from the front bumper to the back bumper , hope this helps!

Re: Tranny noise..HELP!!!

You don't say what engine you have. If it's a 4 cylinder you could also have an AX-5 which was used behind the 4 cylinder only. If so I know where there is one for sale that only has 30,000 original miles on it. You'd have to pay shipping but you could get it pretty cheap I think. Nickmil.
