Busted without mud flaps?!

I got pulled over today for not having mud flaps on my CJ. I didnt know I needed them? Well, in Washington, they have to cover the tire down to the center of the axle.

Anyone use some sort of quick disconnect deal to remove the flaps for wheeling?

Re: Busted without mud flaps?!

I have been thinking about the same thing.. in PA law it says that if you have a 45deg angle you need flaps.. I havn't seen it enforced. My dad had that told to him when he tried to get his stock f150 (79) inspected.

Re: Busted without mud flaps?!

An easy way would be a bracket with studs sticking out, then use wing nuts to hold the rubber on. Easy, fairly quick and reliable. I can think of some other ways, but would be less reliable. I like to use the KISS principle: Keep it Simple Sweetheart (or Keep It Simple, Stupid! depending on your personal bent *grin*)

You could rivet on some snaps, like a tonneau cover for a truck bed uses.

Re: Busted without mud flaps?!

I ws thinking of a paino hinge, or something of that sort. That way, I can pull the pin out, and the flaps are gone.

Anyone else ever done that?

Re: Busted without mud flaps?!

I was always under the impression that if it didnt come on the vehicle from the factory, it didnt need to be there. Sort of like how we can get away with running without doors, a top or even the windshield(on some of the older jeeps).

Re: Busted without mud flaps?!

It depends on the state laws what you have to have. In Alaska, a lifted rig needs mudflaps, though I only know one guy that has been stopped for it--he has a stock height D50 and oversize tires. He had mudflaps, but had to kick all the mud off of them to show the trooper. It doesn't matter how BIG or SMALL the mudflaps are here, but just that you have SOMETHING!
