how do I pull a YJ steering shaft apart?

here is the situation, in my 1984 CJ-8, i have a steering column out of an 88 s-10 blazer and the original cj-8 steering box. i found a YJ steering shaft would mate with the column, had real u-joints, but didn't mate with the box and wasn't long enough. so, i cut off the lower u-joint on the steering shaft and bought a Flaming River u-joint to adapt the DD shaft to the spline on the CJ box. the shaft is still too short. so, instead of cutting, sleeving, and re-welding the steering shaft...i thought of buying a section of DD shaft from Flaming River ($20). now, i will pull the lower DD shaft out of the YJ staft and put the new shaft in with the new shaft from Flaming River. well, i pull, and i pull, and the shaft slides in and out, but won't come all the way out. is there some sort of clip inside there holding it in? how do i get it out? any help or humor is greatly appreciated! thanks! matt

I warmed my shaft over a flame to soften the plastic inside then I clamped one side of the steering shaft to my bumper. I then ran the winch cable around a large tree and back to the other side of the shaft. The winch pulled it apart easily.

I clamped the larger end in a vise and took a piece of all thread slid it down the center (against the small dia. piece) and tapped it out with a hammer. fell right out.

Heat it with a torch and pull apart.
