manual and auto trannies - book ideas

I'm looking into getting some books on manual and automatic transmissions. Not factory repair manuals, not Jeep-specific books either, just basic automotive knowledge books that explains how they are built and how they work (kinda like the stuff on only with a LOT more detail). I'm looking at two books by William Crouse (one is called Automatic Transmissions, the other Manual Transmissions), but they are a bit dated so I don't know how good their info still is. Any ideas from anyone? If not, I'll just get the books from Crouse. Thanks in advance.

Just go down to your local junior college if it has an Automotive Tech program, most do nowadays, and buy the texts at the bookstore. My stepson graduated from one last year and the books he has are excellent.
