79 CJ 5 stock Gear Ratio?

What is my stock gear ratio in my 79 CJ 5, with a 258 and a t18, not quadra-trac, came with a soft top.

can I turn 33's with these gears?

Re: 79 CJ 5 stock Gear Ratio?

Yep 3.54 sounds right for standard gearing. 4.09s were an option. The T-18 was an optional tranny, I'd be wondering since the original purchaser opted for the lower gears of the T-18 if he would have also opted for the optional 4.09 gears. You might be able to read a code off the axle housing. If you look at your axle to the right of the diff cover where the axle tube goes into the center section you may find a letter code stamped there.

A = std diff 3.54 gears
AA = Trac-Lok diff 3.54 gears
N = Trac-Lok diff 3.54 gears
C = std diff 4.09 gears
L = std diff 4.09 gears
CC = Trac-Lok 4.09 gears
M = Trac-Lok 4.09 gears

Re: 79 CJ 5 stock Gear Ratio?

I have 33X9.50"s on my 78 with 3:54 and don't have any troubles. I have swapped in a Dana 300 for better low range than the Mod 20 will give you but consider what you actually need. For primarily street you will have no problems with the 3:54's

You can easily turn 33's with 3.54. I wheeled that combo for a while.
