OT - stock cars

I posted this question on the Closed Course/Mud Racing board, but after a couple weeks still nobody has responded. So I guess I'll try it here. I was basically just wondering why they're called stock cars, because there doesn't seem to be anything stock about them.

Re: OT - stock cars

Well... if you go to most any local oval track you'll see divisions that run cars that are still pretty much "stock" with some mods... But it really goes back to the old days of racing when a stock car was really(or nearly, anyway) a showroom stock car. Think early Nascar, etc.

Re: OT - stock cars

Those were the days my friend,
We though they'd never end...

Yep pretty much took 'em off the showroom floor tossed in a roll bar and ran 'em. Didn't even bother with the rollbar way back, but that was before my time.

Since there was a lot of factory sponsorship, they built special model to race. They had to build a minimum production run. I don't remember what the minimum was. The Dodge Daytona and Plymouth Super Bee are a couple that come to mind. I think the Mercury Cyclone with the fiberglass hood was another.
