Exhaust Welding ?

I'm converting to a 4.0L and the exhaust manifold is cracked. (from 96 GC) My friend is excellent welder, I haven't asked him, but what would you use to weld up the crack until I buy a header?

Re: Exhaust Welding ?

I've seen people weld them but it doesn't last.

Re: Exhaust Welding ?

i've seen them welded and they do last though too. i dont know with what, but if you are getting headers, i guess the quick fix isnt as crucial long term.

Re: Exhaust Welding ?

would be more permanant to braze it, if oxy/acet is available ( assuming its cast) f it isnt cast weld it away..

also, JB weld will hold it for a while if it isnt in a stress part ( like a bolt hole area) clean the crapola out o fit with a wire brush, then brake cleaner, after the cleaner has evaporated goop that stuffon there, wait 24 hours ( or what package says ) before running it.

I had it hold for several months on an old FORD 302.

too small to be seen, and too big to control, and treated like a walking bomb...

Re: Exhaust Welding ?

i've had great success with a nickel rod made by lincoln can't remember the # off hand but i've welded a few manifolds and its holding well on all. mine(304) was welding all the broke studs at the donut gasket, all air injection holes(or what ever they were for), and a crack down the front 2 years and still going. i'd groove the crack some then use a good cleaner that evaporates clean.

Re: Exhaust Welding ?

delete this hole thing if i'm wrong- this is stainless?
a good tig welder can fix this and tack on a small gusset
to help the expansion probs. it aint expensive. i'll do it.

when in doubt.........
