Which Carb for my 258?

I need to buy a carb to finish off my engine rebuild, and was wondering everyones ideas. Here are a few off the things that I am looking for:
1. simple design and/or jetted to my engine specs right off the shelf.
2. the engine that I am running is a rebuilt 258 0.30 over whith a mid range Clifford cam and soon to have headers.
I am pretty good with engines but when it comes to carbs I'm completely illiterate.
Thanks for any suggestions

Re: Which Carb for my 258?

Do a search on the MC2100. A lot of people seem to have a very good experience with this carb. Another option would be the Weber 32/36 or the Weber 38. I have got the Weber 32/36 and although pleased with the overall running of the engine, I find this carb hard to fine tune.

I've heard good things about the Rochester conversion. It's supposed to perform very well at high-angle positions.

Re: Which Carb for my 258?

I have a Holley 500 cfm on my 258. It runs great for my rebuilt motor with stock cam. I had to change the powervalves and jets but that was pretty simple. It took only a adaptor to mount up the the stock manifold and some ready rod to make the linkage work. I need to sell it because I just got fuel injection to put on. If you are looking for a carb, let me know.

My girlfriend said if I spent one more dime on my Jeep she would leave. Man I'm going to miss her!

Tippy, are you using a 2-barrel? If so, what jets and powervalve are you using? I have a 350 cfm Holley 2-barrel on my 258 and am unhappy with it.

Re: Which Carb for my 258?

Go with the MC 2100. You can get one at most parts stores. Ask for a carb for a '79 CJ-7 w/ a 304. This should get you the right one. There will be a core charge, but there are ways around that, just put your carter in the box then return it for the core. They usually dont check or dont know the difference anyway. Or you could go to your local pick-n-pull, and get one off a ford 302, mine came off a 82 f-100 w/ a v-6. You wont regret the swap. BTW I have a 258 bored .040, w/ a crane rv cam, it works great on mine. Read some of the post on the 2100 and you'll have all the info you need. Good luck.

Re: Which Carb for my 258?

what kind of performance boost will the MC2100 give me over my stock carb on my 79 CJ5, anyone want to take a guess at a horsepower or torque number?
thanks
