Need AMC 20 axle specs

I need to know the ring gear diameter of a model 20 axle. I would also like to know if someone has one opened up how far to the mating surface between the carrier cap and the housing from the cover flange, if that makes sense. I am trying to get some autocad drawings done and I do not have access to a 20 housing for a couple more days. Any help is appreciated!

Re: Need AMC 20 axle specs

Hey Steve,

Sorry I haven't been able to turn up a donor axle to ship to you... We've got one coming out of a CJ-7 sometime in the next couple of weeks. Sorry also for being a little slow on the response, the holidays have been taking their toll.

Also of note, be aware that there are two versions of the 20 that are common, to my knowledge. The narrow track and the wide track. The narrow track is everything pre-1982(I think) while the widetrack is everything else up to 1986. As far as I know, the only difference is the length of the tubes, and brakes. Neither of these should impact your designs.

One thing I would note though, there were several sizes of gas-tank in the CJ's that carried 20's, the clearance between the tank and the diff cover may be an issue. I would be happy to measure mine.

I also have a spare diff cover you are welcome to if it would help.

'83 CJ-7 nothing original but the tub and axle tubes

Re: Need AMC 20 axle specs

No problem on the axle. I found a housing in a salvage yard about an hour away. I am going to pick it up in the next couple days. As far as the cover, the depth will not be any deeper than the stock cover, but will be squared off at the top with a built in skid plate on the bottom. It should increas fluid capacity by almost one quart. It will also have a drain plug. I plan on building six 20 trusses next week if you are interested drop me an email and I will get one on the way.

Re: Need AMC 20 axle specs

I now have a 20 housing, just one more question. I think the spring pads look too far apart, I need the dimension inside to inside of the ubolts from side to side, or the center to center dimension for the spring pads. The center to center on the springpads of the one I have is about 36".

Thanks
