Great CJ pulling a Mustang Pic

The Jeep is just so darn adaptable. This pic combines two of my favorite rigs--Jeeps and Mustangs--oh, and Ford Mustang cars aren't bad either, but I kinda like the sound of a V-12 Merlin winding up!

Incidently, the name of the aircraft is "Precious Metal"

Sweet,... P51's are bad ass.
The CJ5 needs a roll cage though.

Now that adds an interesting new twist to the thought of swapping in a Mustang motor. Probably have to use a relocated electric radiator fan to get it to fit though.

cj5_pilot, are you the "pilot" of this plane or the cj5-pilot?

Since that pic is from pylon1.com I assume that it was taken at Reno?

I'd love to go up in one of those

Great pic! Two of the best vehicles in the world. Man.........the P-51 has always been one of the most sexy of any aircraft. (especially the later D and above model bubble canopy ones IMHO)

Re: Great CJ pulling a Mustang Pic

jps4ever, I wish I was the pilot of either one! I am a licensed private pilot, but not definitely not type-rated in the P51! I made it to the Reno airraces in 1999, and it was a ball! In addition to seeing all the old "heavy iron" piston aircraft, the local Jeep club was running the officials all over the race course. They were all running prototype Goodyear MT/Rs. Evidently Goodyear had made some kind of deal with them for checking out the new tires. (Few years ago I got to see a caravan of Ford Expedition prototypes here in Alaska--a year before they went on the market! They were being tested here)

Andytron--yep the pic is from Reno. I don't normally post pics I didn't take myself, but felt it was okay this once! If it hadn't had the Pylon1 stuff on it, I would have made sure to post where it was from. Pylon1 has a great site!

The pilot of this P51 for that year was Gary Levitz. I saw Gary's last race. His homebuilt unlimited racer "Miss Ashley II" (based on P51 data with a Griffon engine, contr-rotating props and a modified Lear Jet wing) came apart in turn 1 of the second lap of the Unlimited Gold race on Saturday of the 1999 Reno championship.

Anyhow, glad everyone liked the pic!

It's all a state of mind, and if you don't mention the state of my mind, I'll be happy to overlook yours!

Two pieces of classic American Iron that are all too swiftly passing into history. It's good to see them together... it kinda brings a tear to the eye.
