Speedometer gear selection

I have a 29 tooth (black) speedo gear in my NP231. My odometer is about 14% lower than it should be. I travel 114 actual miles, odometer states 100 miles... JEEP told me that 29 tooth speedo gear was the lowest tooth count they have. With 33" tires, does anyone have any suggestions on the tooth count I am looking for and where to find it?

Thanks.

I don't know about the gears, but if you just lift it a bit more, and run 38 inch tires, your speedo will be correct!

Re: Speedometer gear selection

I was only looking at spending $10-$15. Last time I checked, a huge lift and new 38's were a little more than that. :-)

Give Mepco 4x4 a call. They should be able to help you out. They don't cost that much either, from what I have heard. Dealerships are notorious for not wanting to help if it will take them more than 5 min. to look up.

what ring and pinion are you running ,and actual diam.of tires being 33 . 3.55/1=29 teeth-3.07/1=25--4.11/1=33 http://www.jeeptech.com./javaAps/Speedo.html
i bought a used 28 and 27 tooth today{10.00 ea.} for 1990 yj w/30"tires AND 3.07-took out 30 tooth and used 28 tooth -it seemed closer of the 27 &28--mine was the long shaft smaller diameter type- let me know and i can check and see if they have what you are looking for-he said the ones i got came came out of chrysler trans.

Re: Speedometer gear selection

Isn't the idea to figure out by what percentage your speedo is out and add that number of teeth.
You are out 14%. 29 teeth times 14% is 4.6. add 4 teeth and you should have a gear with 33 teeth on it
At least that's close to how it works from what I remember.

Re: Speedometer gear selection

I've got 3.07 gears.

Stooby, I think your percentage calculation would work, but it should be 14% less teeth. If that calculation is correct then 26 tooth gear would give me an 11.5% correction, where a 25 tooth would give me a 16% correction. I guess I need to start looking for a 25.4 tooth speedo gear :-)

Re: Speedometer gear selection

The part # from desert rat is SG26L. The chart says this is the gear for a YJ 231 transfer case with 33" tires and 3.07 gears. It sells for $19.99 +$7.99 shipping. 24 hour phone # is 1-888-469-5337.
You should measure your tires as mentioned, and either call them or let me know and i'll scan the chart out of their catalog and post it so you can see all the different gears available.
Good luck!
