V8 swap necessary for 38s, Dana 60s?

As some of you may know, I will probably be selling my current Jeep and buying another YJ. On this next Jeep I am going to go all out, as far as bigger axles/gears, tires, and so on. In the end I plan on running 38" tires with Dana 44 or 60 axles. With this setup, I'm guessing it would require that I have a V8 instead of the I6. Am I correct on this? I just want to know because if I do need a V8, I'm going to look for a Jeep that has one already installed. That way I can immediately dismiss the 6 cylinder Jeeps in the classifieds.

Not necessarily. Gears, terrain, and driving style dictate what engine is necessary. Jason Bunch runs a 4 cyl in his ARCA rockcrawler.

The 4.0 HO engine is plenty addequate.
Fuel Injected V8's are sure sweet though.

Re: V8 swap necessary for 38s, Dana 60s?

the 4.0 is a sweet motor. I know elusive's jeep has a 4.0 (stock as far as i know) and that thing turns 38's. It's all in the gearing and the driving style. If Gumbo mud is you style then a v-8 will defientally help tun 38's though thick pudding. I would say for most wheeling (anything besides flat mud bogs) a fuel injected motor is much nicer than a carb and can out perform a carbed v-8. If i was shopping for a used jeep with a v-8 it would either have to be factory (cj7 w/ amc 304) or a really good conversion with a fuel injected v-8 that was emissions legal in your area (most places same year or newer motor) and the swap would have to be done really well (like a reputable shop or mechanic that did it and quality parts were used, no skimping on it). If some one puts the time and money to put a v-8 in thier jeep there's got to be a good reason they are selling it. Also the 4.0 can be built to make 250-300 horses with a stoker kit and some other basic mods (a little more than the cost of a stock re-build) and then it's a torquey motor that kicks but off road.

Re: V8 swap necessary for 38s, Dana 60s?

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies and advice. Although it would be pretty sweet having a V8, I think that you're correct in saying the 4.0L is enough. Besides, I haven't seen one Jeep for sale near me that has a V8, and if one does it probably won't be fuel injected, which is an absolute must for me. It'll also be nice keeping the stock engine so that maybe one day I'll actually be able to use my Factory Repair Manual. Thanks again guys. Glad to hear I can stick with the I6!

I am running 38's and the 4.0 the engine is bone stock. it turns the 38.5X14 tsl/sx no problem. like said above.. it's all about gears...5.38's in the d-60's, 5.6/1 first gear and 3.8/1 transfer case gears. my last jeep had 300+hp, 4.56 gears and the same tires.. i dont miss the V-8 at all
