Mini spool in Ford 8.8\"

I'm back, if anyone remembers me (yep, it's been a while), and am back to that old 8.8" swap I had started on. Still haven't decided on a locker or spool. Anyone running a mini spool? This YJ is primarily for the trail and the occasional trip to the ice cream store, maybe gets 1k-2k mi / yr.
Just looking for a cheap locked rear without having to reset the pinion.

Re: Mini spool in Ford 8.8\"

I put a Summit mini spool in my 9" to decide if I liked it without throwing alot of cash at it. It works great, haven't had any problems in over 2 years. I run 33" swampers. The Jeep handles different now, that's for sure. Likes to go straight. The tires squeal when going around corners, but much less with the bias ply swampers than when I run the radial all-terrains. Off road you'll love it. I run the Jeep around town a bit but mostly to go wheeling. I would do it again in a minute.

Re: Mini spool in Ford 8.8\"

I do have an extra set of spider gears for my 31 spline axles, it is definitley an option. But if I can get a used 8.8" spool for $50, it is an easy drop it that I can take out if I decide to take a long road trip. Thanks for the inputs,

Re: Mini spool in Ford 8.8\"

Hi v8, I remember you.. I had mine welded not long ago, but my friend only welded the gears together. Last weekend the weld broke, but it still runs, sometime it locks then unlocks.. But anyway, I do alot of street with mine, I just make sure I keep the pressure even in the tires.. I'm gonna have it rewelded this weekend, but to the carrier also this time.. I know that the gears and the carrier are not the same metal, and that when you weld you need to take that in consideration.. Anybody know what kind of welding tips you need to do this weld???
