You're on the right track, but make sure the bolts are button heads (with allen head), a hex head will catch on stuff. And I would paint them as cheaply as possible, they are there to get scratched up, make it easy on yourself to repaint them. I just used black Rustoleum.

What did you do about the bottom corrners? I bought some 5/16 hex heads and lock nuts since that's all i could find. I also get duplicolor bedliner for the fronts and undercoating for the side that goes up against the body, i've got one cut and i'm about ready to drill the holes and cut the other one.

If you mean the bottom corners underneath, I just cut them at an angle to as not to catch anything. Here's a pretty poor quality pic, from last year, note the corner in the lower right corner of the pic.

I also made my own, but used 5x4x1/4 because I have a FG tub, and couldn't just bolt them to the sheetmetal like most folks do. I used long piece of 3" wide 1/4 inch bar stock that I tapped for the screws as a doubler inside the tub.
I didn't even want the button head bolts protruding, so I used countersunk fasterners.

Rustoleum for me as well!
