recessing winch

I have seen some pics of rigs that have the winch recessed between the frame rails. Is there any issues with doing this? It seems as though if i cut the circular cross member the point where the shackle attaches to the frame will be weak. Any ideas or comments would be appreciated. I am just looking at how i am going to do this without jepordizing strength.

Re: recessing winch

Not sure about your YJ but by looking at my CJ7 I think it would be easier to remove the front crossmember, fit the winch between the frame rails and then build a new crossmember around the winch. This would be a good chance to beef up the steering box brace. Good Luck:

Re: recessing winch

Something like this? I had to cut a couple little notches in the front crossmember, then I ran into the steering box.
