Winch broke - simple or no?

Superwinch S9000. Clutch lever is set to free (not engaged). Hit the wind "in" button on the remote. Sparks fly from the side of the winch where the remote plugs in. Now when the remote buttons are pushed, there's a noticeable "click" but the winch doesn't turn (in or out).

The winch is set up properly, and properly grounded, etc. Visual inspection of the solenoids proves all connections to be tight. It did this because the clutch lever wasn't "engaged." Did it fry the solenoids? They still "click." Did it fry the motor? The sparks came from the opposite end of the winch from the motor.

Ugh....

Re: Winch broke - simple or no?

Yep - one day old. I called Superwinch, and the guy said the solenoids could be bad even if I still hear a "click."

He's faxing me some info on how to bypass the solenoids to see if the motor works, and I'm going to check for contact "between the motor studs and the cover" when I get home.

Really nice guy. Said he'd send me some new solenoids if that proves to be the problem. I hope it is!

Re: Winch broke - simple or no?

Well, I did some checking. One of the studs on the motor is very close to the winch cover, but none appear to be touching.

I also followed the Superwinch guy's suggestion and rewired the ground wire from the frame to the (-) battery terminal. Wha-la. It works again. Go figure. I've got a direct ground from battery to frame, and the winch worked the first time just fine like this. The second time it screws up. I move the ground, now it's fine again. Hmmmm...
