Any way to identify gear ratio of T18??

I'm shopping for a T18. I'm not in a big hurry as funds are low. Reading the archived posts, I know there is two versions. One with a 4.XX gear ratio, and one with a 6.32 gear ratio. Now....

Most likey, I'll be looking at a tranny in a truck, or trying to buy it over the 'net. Is there any way to know the gear ratio, without removing the tranny and turning the input/output shafts??

Any help?

DREW

1st gear isn't synchro-ed on a T18. neither version. 2nd, 3rd and 4th are. If you want a syncro-ed first gear you need to get a T19. But the gear ratio isn't quite as low in the T19. around 5.5:1 i think.

no way top tell for sure in2deep.

make sure it says T18a on the case or 1301,

if it says that the odds are in your favor.

Drew,
I mucked about in this site, but I could not improve on the help you've gotten from the above posters.

http://www.off-road.com/jeep/tech/trans/t18.html

This clicky, and its links, gives you the years and usages for the T-18a.
Maybe that will be helpful to you.
All the best

Re: Any way to identify gear ratio of T18??

Drew, the 2wd Ford T-18 I used has the 6.32 first gear. It has T18-1E stamped on the side of the case. It`s an early version which reverse gear is over and up. The later models were over and back. Hope this helps.
