Stainless Steel Shackles?

I am going to make new shackles for my CJ-7 and YJ using some scrap 3/8" bar stock. Would there be any problems doing this since I have never seen any commercial SS shackles?

Re: Stainless Steel Shackles?

Stainless Steel? Hummm, what about the hardness, ductial, and brittle factor for Stainles compaired to the usuall stuff? The shackle takes some very awsome stresses and has to perform day in and day out. I'd bet that the Stainless Steel will not meet the stress specifications or you'd see the stuff being sold to every new Jeeper by Steel Horse & the like.

Re: Stainless Steel Shackles?

most types od stainless should work fine, cost is the main concern. we use a lot of stainless in our molds and they have 80000 lbs of pressure against them. 3/8 thick stainless will be fine.

Re: Stainless Steel Shackles?

stainless is TUFF stuff, way stronger than mild steel, so I so go if you have it hanging around ( I wouldnt buy it over mild steel $$ wise tho)

you could use 3/16 or 1/4 and be way stronger than almost any mild steel shackle

Re: Stainless Steel Shackles?

I know stainless is tough, but how about brittleness? Anyone out there a structural engineer or metalurgist? If it would work, I'd be interested as I HATE things that rust!

It's all a state of mind, and if you don't mention the state of my mind, I'll be happy to overlook yours!

Re: Stainless Steel Shackles?

I would think 3/8" SS would be plenty strong. Look sharp too. I have made a few things out of stainless for my jeep but mostly out of thinner stuff.

Re: Stainless Steel Shackles?

I've been using stainless shackles for ten years now. 8 of them where on a FS Chevy and 2 years on my Jeep. No problems to speak of yet.

Re: Stainless Steel Shackles?

I can speak for a few types of stainless, 304 and a286.

304 isnt brittle, a 286 is more so, but not to the point it couldnt be used for this.

both can be bent and bent back with less fatige than mild steel.

I have no hard data, no numbers ( im sure somone does). this is just an opinion from me working with these metals for a few years.

3/8 stainless 304 would be a strong shackle.
