Ring and pinion set-up?

Where can I get any info on detailed instruction of setting up differentials. I'm trying to put together my next wish list for the Wrangler(with Chevy D44's) and trying to get a good idea on cost.

I want to go with 4.56/ or 4.88 gears and detroits front and back. Any suggestions on who to buy these parts from?

Go to http://www.ring-pinion.com and download the manual (pdf file), its under tech stuff or something like that. The manual from Randy's is the best I've seen, its a pdf. I bought all my diff stuff from Randy's 2 years ago, but they now carry Yukon Gear which I am unfamiliar with, although I can't imagine them carrying anything thats not topnotch.

I took a chance in buying my D44 Detroits and gears off E-bay. Got a used Detroit with used 4.56 gears for $400 or so. Didn't have that many miles on them. And then I got another used Detroit for around $350 or so. I'm pretty happy with them!! Just still adapting my driving style with the new lockers on the street. But it's really not that bad. Would be alot better if you could get your hands on the newer Detroit Soft Locker!! Mine are the older style.

Is the Soft locker as good as the old locker? I do street my Jeep but do more off roading than anything. More mud than anything real hard core.

To my knowledge, the new Soft Locker design is just as strong as the old one. They don't even make the old ones anymore. The new design is suppose to be a lot nicer on the street. Not as much clunking and chirping and squeeling. But hey, that's half the fun!! Right?[img]/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif[/img]

I've done gear setup before...what they don't stress but should is how critical the pinion depth is. Personally, I think its worth the $200 to pay someone else to do it....Its a lot of work.
As for lockers...I'm a firm believer that if its a daily driver, ARB is the way to go...but if it sees more offroad than on-road, the good ole Detroit is the strongest...the new soft locker is strong...but not as strong as the full Detroit.
