Having YJ sit for 4 months? What to do?

Well, I'm off to Ft. Lost in the Wood, Misery on Jan 15th. I'll be there for around 4 months doing my BCT and AIT. I'm just wondering if I'll be okay leaving my Jeep in the garage for that time, or if I need to prep it for winter or anything? I know people do certain things to their cars when they store them for winter.

I'd just hit it with a little Sta-Bil, but 4 months is nothing. Bring pictures with you, the guys there will want to see it and won't believe you.

Wait a minute, scratch that. I forgot. When you get there, they make you take anything civilian and put it in a storage room, so you don't have access to your clothes, pictures, or anthing. Well, they did 15 years ago anyway. It's part of the "break you from your mommy" conditioning. Their philisophy is to break you down, then they'll build you back their way, the right way. I gotta say it works, I saw some pure "momma's boys" go in and men come back out. One guy wasn't even recognized by his parents, he weighed about 280 lbs when he went in and about 150 at graduation, he was motivated through and through, and it paid off.

I think the jeep will be fine for 4 months, if you can close up the air intake you'll be better off, so mice won't build a nest. Also disconnect the battery and chain the steering wheel (if you live in a rough neighborhood).

I'm not sure how cold it gets in Oregon, but if that is an issue, check your anti-freeze for protection to the temps the Jeep will see. It would suck to come back to a cracked block and busted radiator! Also, todays gas really sucks. It can turn to a sticky varnish like substance in 3-6 months. I would add some stabil to it like was said above. This will make sure the gas doesent coagulate in your fuel system.

Come on James. You know I'd babysit it for you so it doesn't get lonely while your gone. Just drop it off on the way by. I'll be gentile with her. I might even do that headlight conversion you've been wanting so bad for ya. See how nice I can be?

Re: Having YJ sit for 4 months? What to do?

I kinda figured they'd take all my stuff away. But I got a bunch of addresses to people I was gonna write to. What about that? As for the Stabil junk, I assume i just poor it in, then run it for a minute or two, and then park her?

Dave, you're dreaming man!! I'd come back and my Jeep would look like a freaking bug. And you'd probably take my YJ grill and stick it on your CJ! Or you might just transfer junk from one to the other, and try to pass your CJ as my Jeep. Loser!!

Re: Having YJ sit for 4 months? What to do?

This reminds me of a funny story..
When I went to basic training for the Air Force in '86, I didn't have a suitcase I wanted to bring, so I borrowed my sisters.
After we got to the barracks on the first night, the TI's made us empty the contents of our individual suitcases on our bunks went around harrassing and yelling at everyone.
As I was shaking mine out, a TAMPON fell out that was stuck in one of the elastic side pockets of my sister's suitcase!!!!
I was scared ****less, and was able to grab it, hide it in my pants and get rid of it before anyone noticed. I can't even imagine the hell I would have endured if that item was noticed!
So the moral of the story is MAKE SURE you don't bring anything with you that you shouldn't.

Oh God Bob. I'm really sick at the moment and your little story made my crosseyed brain work overtime on that. Man I think I would have died on the spot in boot if that would have happened to me. All I can picture is trying to explane that one to DI jeepgod(lol). I'd still be on some sort of f-ed up kp detail. SHUDDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First things first...Remain Calm! She'll still be there when you get back. Don't leave her after an argument, she'll never forgive you. In Sept when I headed to the mid-east I sat in my Jeep drinking a beer talking to her for 20 mins. Have someone send you pictures, the DI will look at them but he won't take them if you get them in the mail. Just hope you don't get a remote short tour straight out of AIT.

Oh and I found it easier to shave my head before I shipped out
