weld the front or not?

Do you all think that my front 30 axle will break very easily if I weld up the spiders? Ive only got a 225 v6 so I dont really have major power to contend/work with. Good idea or bad??

Re: weld the front or not?

I've been wondering the same thing. I have a 4 banger in my YJ. I thought about buying a Posi-Lok which completely disconects the front via cable, and welding the front. I hope some people have some answers for us.

Re: weld the front or not?

a buddy welded his front d44 in a yj and he could not turn very well afterwards. i don't sugguest it for this reason. his steering was fine with the hubs unlocked but with them locked histeering was cut in half.

Re: weld the front or not?

I would find a well trained monkey to get in and out to unlock one hub when you want to turn. I don't think I would weld the front. I have an ARB in the front, and I can't even turn with the front locked (no PS). You could do it, but you would have to unlock a hub to turn, unless you have power steering.

Boston Mangler welded the front on his YJ, says he loves it and has no problems with anything. Give him a shout.

Re: weld the front or not?

Depends on your terrain. If you live in the SW and drive on slickrock very much you will hate yourself for doing it, you won't be able to turn. Its even a pain with a locker. If you wheel mostly mud, or dirt, then I don't see a problem.

Am I going to have any problems with breakage?

Re: weld the front or not?

Of course it will break, welded or not. I have a 258 6 with 30" donuts and just shucked 9 teeth off the ring trying to back up hill out of a ditch. IMHO you might as weld it up and see if you like it. Then you'll know whether or not to weld your new axle when the D30 breaks.

Re: weld the front or not?

I welded my front. All I did was full in some teeth on the spider gears, so I have a little play. did not weld the carrier at all. So if I want to go normal just replace spider gears

Re: weld the front or not?

How do you get the spiders out once they're welded together? They have to come out individually.
