4.2L Head Gasket

All manuals I have looked at say to add sealant for the 4.2L head gasket (and specifically no sealant to the 2.5L and 4.0L). Fel-Pro says not to use sealant on non-metal gaskets. Any suggestions?

Re: 4.2L Head Gasket

I was faced with the same thing when I did mine. I asked couple of people and was told it would leak if I didn't use sealer, and to use the copper coat in the spray can and put a light coat on both sides.
On a side note, the blown gasket I took off was a Fel-Pro and didn't have any sealer (the head and gasket was only a year old according to the PO)
I did put the copper coat on, and haven't had any problems so far.
I say use the sealer on it like the manual says.

Re: 4.2L Head Gasket

I always thought that you wern't supposed to use any kind of sealer on a head gasket. Maybe thats why mine is pissing oil out at the block mating surface. It never did it before I changed the gasket but there is no loss of compression. What kind of sealer did you use? What brand?

Just use the spray on Permatex copper, thats what I've used for many years, its the best IMO.

Re: 4.2L Head Gasket

YJ 88, that's the same thing mine was doing, oil running down the block. But I also had one water streak down the block. Ran like that for a 1000 miles or so, then started leaking between cylinders. IMO, sealer is definately needed.

Re: 4.2L Head Gasket

Is this 258 specific info? I have used Fel-Pro "Print-o-seal" head gaskets for years on everything with no sealer and have never had one leak. These are the gaskets with a "Printed" on silicone bead around all the water & oil passeges. The only head gaskets I have used the Spray Copper on are the stamped sheetmetal ones I ran on the race car. They never leaked either.
