I had an '84 XJ Cherokee with the same problem. The steering column is made of aluminum, and not a very high grade. It is rather weak, especially if you hit it with your knee getting out of the truck. (Like me.) There are three ways to fix this. 1: Buy another column from a junkyard, and paint-to-match. (easiest) 2: Buy a column from a junkyard, and rebuild your old one. Need to use the upper tube (or the entire tube) and the bearings from the donor column. (difficult) 3: Go to a chrysler dealer and buy a new upper tube and bearings, then rebuild your old one. (difficult + absurdedly expensive!) Hope this helps!!
