FSJ Tow Rating

I have a 84 GW that I want to tow with. The max tow rating on my FSJ is 5000 lbs. The camper I will be towing is 6000 lbs. (How does a manufacturer arive at the tow rating #?)I don't know for sure what the axle ratio's are but I assume they are either 2.72 or 3.31. I will be towing through the mountains of E. Tennessee and N.C. and want to make sure the Jeep can handle the job. I thought about adding a 4" skyjacker lift and probably 31" tires. I believe when I put the larger tires on the final ratio will drop to an unacceptable level. Given the above info and the fact that my GW did not come with a tow PKG. what can I do to increase the tow capabilities of my GW? I thought of swapping a dana 60 in for the amc 20 and lower the ratio to 3.80- 4.11 range. Does anyone know if a dana 60 out of another vehicle will bolt in place of the 20? If not does anyone custom build the Dana 60 for the GW? Any help or advice would be appreciated till better paid...

Re: FSJ Tow Rating

You can regear the AMC 20 model axle to what ever ratio you want ( but you really need to do the front also!)

A dana 60 would be nice, one from a late 80s J truck would probably fit, its a bit wider ( 5-6 inches probably) and you could get the matching front axle too!

I think Id just regear, Get the biggest tranny cooler you can find, make the tranny work right, the kickdown has to be set just right or even a little tight ( very positive shifts) to make a 727 live especially with 2.72 gears!!..

the towing packages on these trucks were : mirrors, hitch, tranny cooler, lockup torque converter DELETE option, 3.31 gears

so if youve got 2.72 and a lockup converter itll be pushing it!
