NP228 or GM 205

Hey guys. I was thinking about doin' the swap on my '85 GW. Chevy 383HD, TH700 R4? (maybe a THM 400 but that O/D would be nice when I go back home for Christmas). Anyway, the guy I was looking at getting the engine from has the 700 R4 and a GM 205 transfer case. Stock is the NP228, can I adapt that to a 700 R4 (I haven't been able to find anyone here with one anyway, but most people around here say "Jeep? Where'd ya' find one of those?" or "Is that Four Wheel Drive?"). Just curious what you thought as far as reliability/ease of adaptability.

Re: NP228 or GM 205

I was told that the 205 was available in either P or D configurations. Either way, would rebuilding my stock 228 be worth it?
