jeep wont start

I have a 1985 grand wangoneer, 360ci, AT. It will not make a sound when I turn the key. The dash lights go on, the wipers work. The battery is charged. I have a new starter. How can I isolate the problem so I know what is causing it not to start. Can I bypass the relay, coil, etc?
And, If I was to attach a positive jumper cable directly to the wire going to my starter from my relay, should it crank over?

Re: jeep wont start

it was a wire melted into another wire from the ignition switch to the starter realy. The lt. blue one, or "S" wire.
its fixed and runs kinda.
