starter ring teeth

77 wagoneer, 360 4bbl, quadratrac...

It seems as though I've lost some teeth on my starter ring and of course I can't get my truck started! I haven't taken the transmission out yet so my question... are the teeth on the the torque converter? Are the made into the torque converter or is it a bolt on ring of teeth? Are they on the flywheel? Also, any tips on removing the tranmission that might save me some headaches and relieve the neighbors of a steady stream of profanity? I would love to have the parts on hand when I take the transmission out but the goobs at the auto parts stores are clueless and can't answer any of my questions. Thanks guys!
