Cherokee Cheif driveline help

I just bought a 78 Cherokee Cheif today for 350. It runs great , but i'm not very acusstomed to the 4 wheel drive system. Does the front axle have a vaccuum accuation, or is it always locked since it has Quadratrac? Is Quadratrac made by Borg Warner? Does an np 208 bolt up in place of the Quadracrap? Thanks for any info on the subject.

Re: Cherokee Cheif driveline help

Its a TH400. The 727 didn't come into Jeep use until 1980. The Quad is made by Borg-Warner, and was used from 1973 until 1979. Always behind the TH400, also.
In theory, if you use the t-case adapter from a Chevy/GM TH400, you could bolt an NP 205 or 208 up to an AMC TH400. You'd be better off going to Advance Adapters and buying one of their kits. Its pricy, though. And yes, the front axle is always locked, though you can make it into manual hubs. Just don't do it with the Q-trac still connected. It'll blow.

Re: Cherokee Cheif driveline help

t400 in Jeep used a 10spline output shaft no other tcase wil bolt right up cept a d20 but that will require a different trans case to transfer case adapter and the 400 to d20 adapter is rare and expensive, borg warner quadratrac is highly underrated - in stock form it lived behind 600+ hp desert racers back in the 70's - and yes your axles are always locked in with a BW Quadratrac
