90 Grand Waggie hard starting and idle problems

A buddy of mine has a 1990 5.9L grand waggie. It has the Motorcraft carb #ORHA2 A 9H 14. This beast won't idle when cold and sometimes is a hard starter. My buddy thinks its the carb and I agreed till I got a look at it. Didn't look like the usual Carter with the stepper on the back. But then again, most of my experience is with early model CJs. Any input would be appreciated. TIA

HI, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR CHOKE COIL IS IN NEED OF ADJUSTMENT, IT CAN CAUSE BOTH OF YOUR PROBLEMS. AFTER THE CAR SITS A FEW DAYS, ON MINE, I HAVE TO PUMP IT A FEW TIMES TO GET IT TO START. CHECK OUT THE CHOKE. GOOD LUCK, JOHN
PS THE RIVETS ON THE CHOKE CAN BE CAREFULLY DRILLED OUT AND SMALL BOLTS CAN BE USED IF IT HASN'T BEEN DONE ALREADY.

Re: 90 Grand Waggie hard starting and idle problems

I thought all Jeeps came with electric chokes after 1984. I know the XJs did (I own one), but I thought the FSJs did too. Emissions requirements and such. I could be wrong (and probably am) on this.

choke is first place to look because you say it wont idle when cold...Hard start may be carb leak down, therefore now fuel in the bowl when starting.
