Re: why wont my 4 wheel drive go in

Unless somebody changed your Wagoneer from stock - You have Quadra-trac.
Quadra-trac is a full time four wheel drive system with a center differential to allow for speed difference between front and rear axles.
Your Wag is already in 4 wheel drive.
The knob in the glove box (Emergency Drive) locks the center differential via engine vacuum.
Possible the vacuum system is not functional and will not lockup the center diff.

Check this link for more details and more links to details on the QT system. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/ultimatebb....c;f=2;t=015770

Re: why wont my 4 wheel drive go in

If your QuadraTrac has been modified (like my 78) to a 'part time' system, you'll be able to tell by the locking hubs on the front (not stock to have them). If that's the case, the glove box vacuum switch changes the transfer case between rear wheel drive(lock out the front hubs) and 4WD(lock the front and stay off dry pavement). Good luck.
