Engine swap???

Hey all,
Not that this would happen anytime soon, how hard is it to swap out the AMC 360 for another type? The platform is a '77 cherokee Chief... And which type of engine should I look for? Will I have to fabricate new mounts? Wow i have way to many questions.....
thanks all...JJ

Re: Engine swap???

There is a LOT of work and expence associated with swapping an engine. A better way to go for you may be to have the 360 rebuilt. That way you can just put it right back in where it was. The 360 is a great motor, and if you have the right person work on the rebuild for you then you can really wake one up.

Just somthing to think about if your plans are far off.

Re: Engine swap???

If you do decide to swap, the easiest is a chevy. The TH400 on the jeep is internally the same as the gm th400, so you get a gm th400 to go with the chev engine, swap the tail shaft that fits the QT TC so you can bolt up all original drive shafts. Motor mounts are available through novak or advance adapters, and of course you have the other assorted odds and ends to work out. check out ifsja.org for lots of info.

Re: Engine swap???

You don't really want to get rid of the 360 do you? I just rebuilt the 360 in my 81 J10, I put in a RV cam, dual port 360 intake, Holley 600 carb, and it runs like a raped ape! Just rebuild the 360 is my advice
