going to look at a j10 tomorrow...need advice

OK, pretty much what the subject title says. I have not seen this truck yet. Supposedly it runs good, but the tranny is bad. the owner is throwing a used tranny in to replace the old one. The price is $500 if I put the tranny in, or $700 if he does it. I just need to know what kind of stuff to look out for. what is the difference between a j10 and a j20? this truck is an 82 and an auto tranny. that would be the 727 tranny, right? what would the axles be? looking into the future, what drivetrain parts could I use for my 86 cj7? thanks for the help, Ben

Re: going to look at a j10 tomorrow...need advice

a j10 is a half ton truck, a J20 is a 3/4 ton truck ( dana 60 rear on the 3/4 ton)

both front axles will be dana 44s, drivers side drop, the J10 rear in 1982 was a heavy duty Model 20.

all will be 6 LUG, and about 65 inches wide, pretty wide for a CJ

the trans will be a 727 if its a V8 engine, or a heavy duty option for the 258 I think.

if its a light duty 258 engine application it might be a tf904 or 999.

the Tcase is probably a NP208 if it has lockout hubs, if it doesnt have lockout hubs a 219, 228, or 229, some are full time, all are chain drive aluminum cases.

look fr rust around the fuel tank, and closest frame rail, and in the rear quarters, and on all the metal wheel well flares.
