Oil pressure in a 360?
I am about to get a 86 Wagg. (I hope the guy comes through for me) I am just wondering what should the oil pressure be in a healthy 360? I am going to drive it this weekend, any advise would be great, Thanks.

Re: Oil pressure in a 360?
Oil pressure should be about 7 psi per thousand RPM or better, although some get alarmed if they're not running 12 or better. AMC's are notorious for worn oil pumps resulting in apparently low oil pressure. One bit of good advice: get a good aftermarket oil pressure gauge!

Re: Oil pressure in a 360?
That 7psi per 1000 rpm is a little light...should be about 20 psi at idle and about 35psi max...if it is less a rebuild could help...but due to the fact that AMC oil pump housing is in the timing chain housing and aluminum...any scratches or nicks will drop pressure a lot. With the rebuild all you get is the gears...If you have between 15-20 psi at an idle...change oil and run it...Also do not trust factory gauge...put a mechanical cheapie on it...(about 12.00-15.00)...

Re: Oil pressure in a 360?
I have about 40 PSI on start up and drops to below 10PSI at idle when warm....I have no worries... it's been this way since 98....rebuilt the pump.. no scoring... no change... mach gage revealed same PSI readings...

Re: Oil pressure in a 360?
Bought an 83 GW this year had about 3500 miles on overhaul, supposedly about 5 years ago, oil pump was rebuilt but not replaced. I drove it for 1 month and then came the knocking, new crank shaft and match bearings later. I did however through the whole ordeal find a place that has NEW reproduction Timing chain/Oil Pump/waterpump covers $239.
everything is now together and looks good.
check it out.
