Question on Amc 20

I have an 85 J-10 pick up. it has a dana 44 front.
the rear axle has the smooth round diff cover so I assumed it was an amc 20 BUT i recently tryed to rebuild it and all the amc 20 parts i ordered were too small.

I took the axle shaft into the local drive train shop to have them read the numbers off the bearings and seals, The numbers they came up with were for Dana 44 parts .

so did dana ever make a 44 with the smooth cover? if not why do none of the amc 20 parts ever fit?

the local parts shop's computer doesnt even list my truck ever comming with an amc 20 rear.

can anyone please clarify what i have?
im getting tired of arguing with my 4x4 buddie over what type of axle it is.

Re: Question on Amc 20

It's an AMC 20. Just the HD version.

Try www.randysringandpinion.com I've never dealt with them, but people who have seem to sing their praises.

Re: Question on Amc 20

it sounds like the parts guy gave you parts for a CJ sized amc20, the axle shafts, outer bearings, and axle housing tubes are smaller on teh CJ version.

the gears, carriers, and lockers are the same between the 2 variants.

get a locker for an AMC20 and it will fit, I assume the cover is perfectly round right?

Re: Question on Amc 20

You have the larger AMC 20HD. 8 7/8" ring gear. The other AMC 20 (Cherokee XJ, Wagoneer XJ, Comanche MJ, and the CJ series) is a 7 9/16" ring gear. It is also physically smaller. They probably thought your pickup was a Comanche. (see "tiny truck")

Re: Question on Amc 20

I know they were listed as options but I have never seen the AMC 20 in an XJ/MJ. I'd love to find one that has it just so I know it was actuaully built.

Re: Question on Amc 20

Ozark, the AMC 20 was listed as one of the HD options for the first couple of years in the XJ/MJ. No one has yet to see one, but they were listed as options. The Corp 8.25 didn't come about till the mid 90's. And only in trucks w/o ABS.

Re: Question on Amc 20

In 2000, I sold a 1984 Cherokee Chief XJ with an AMC 20 rear. The truck had the "Selec-Trac" option (light-duty NP229). I would assume the 20 came with that option in the XJs and MJs during the mid and late 80s.
