What 3spd Tranny?

I'm looking at a 77 J10 that has a 258/3spd/Dana20 (Vin: J7F45MCxxxxxx)
Is this 3spd a T150 or something else (hopefully).

Also, I've read that it should have a AMC20 rear, but it sure looks like a D44.

Any help for a CJ guy would be appreciated. What would the tow rating be? Would it flat tow my CJ?

Re: What 3spd Tranny?

The J-10 was available in both 1/2 and 3/4 ton versions. (bed haul/carry capacity) The 258 I-6 is a rather high torque engine, but lacks power. Also, you have "part-time" 4WD, i.e. Dana 20 t-case. As for the axles, both should be Dana 44. The AMC 20 didn't come out until 1980 in the trucks (Cherokee and Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer included).
As for the transmission, here's the list:
1972-1975--->T-14A or T-15A (3sp) OR T-18 (4sp)
1976-1979--->T-15A (3sp) OR T-18A (4sp)
1980-1981--->T-176 (4sp) or T-18A (4sp J20 ONLY)
1982-1983->T-176 (4sp) or T-18A (4sp J-20 ONLY) OR T-5 (5sp)
1984-1988 (J-series ONLY)->T-176 (4sp ALL)
(1984-1991 Grand Wagoneers were available with auto tranny only!)
Now for tow rating. It depends on the gear ratio. 3:73 would be perfect for towing, although 3:55 would keep the engine alive longer. 5000-6000lbs would be the likely range for tow weight, including passengers and cargo (in the J-truck). Should haul the CJ alright, though you might want an overdrive. Hope this helps!

Re: What 3spd Tranny?

t-5 was never used in the sj jeeps, and the j-10 is a half ton only, avail. with a short, long, and stepside bed. the j-20 was a 3/4 ton avil. with the shor wide and long wide bed only.

Actually it was in 82, 83 as part of jeeps better gas mileage campaign. It was probably only offered in 2 yrs until it was realized it was not a strong enough tranny for FSJ.
